2013/14 Division 1 Week 11

It was a clean sweep for the New York teams against their New England opponents to reopen the Division 1 Northeast League after the winter hiatus. NYAC blanked Boston 26-0, White Plains overcame Mystic River 14-8 , while New York Old Blue defeated Middlesex 75-34.

In Somerville, MA, visiting Old Blue racked up a bunch of points against Middlesex, taking advantage of a three try burst mid way through the first half to put some daylight between the teams. Wingers Mike St. Clair and Derek Lipscomb paced Old Blue with three tries each, followed by prop Josh Williams’ brace. Outhalf James Bird also had a couple, while adding about ten conversions.

Despite giving up a lot of points, Middlesex continued to battle away and gave Old Blue fits in certain areas. Middlesex winger Mike Spiro had a couple of tries, and Middlesex #8 Jared Martinelli was rewarded for his tenacity with two tries.

Old Blue coach Stephen Lewis mentioned afterwards “it’s difficult to be too critical when you have just scored 75 points, but there are some areas for improvement. We only secured two of nine kickoffs receptions, and that led directly to three tries for Middlesex”.

The win enables Old Blue to leap-frog Boston in the standings, as Boston fell to NYAC 26-0 in New York. NYAC continues its unbeaten run atop the league with the win.

White Plains reportedly played a more controlled game than Mystic, and although Mystic came pressed hard near the end of the game, White Plains deserved the win.

Next week, Middlesex entertains Boston Irish Wolfhounds, Mystic River play host to Boston, while NYAC travels to White Plains.

Connacht Rugby coming to Boston area

In exciting news out of Boston, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Connacht Rugby are about to announce a new partnership.

The agreement between the New England Division One side and the Irish Province will allow each other to be the main contact for rugby in their respective countries. Player exchange and player development are expected to be the main goals for both parties.  Connacht is believed to be considering sending some players to the Wolfhounds, and those players are expected to be ones who are on the cusp of breaking into the main Connacht panel and may benefit from more playing time.

Connacht will also send coaches to the States, and the first example of this is a coaching camp being tentatively scheduled for June 2014. This camp will target youth and college players. The camp is expected to of minimal cost and will be held in the Boston area, presumably at the Wolfhounds field in Canton, MA.

The budding partnership was initiated by the Wolfhounds’ Eoghan Cahill as part of the club’s recruiting program. “We are building on the successes of our youth program, specifically our U-17 and U-19 teams, and this was the next logical step”, said Cahill. “Our recruiting has to be better, if we are to compete in what is probably one of the toughest Division 1 leagues in the country. We played Boston and Old Blue fairly close in the fall, but we need to do better if we are to accomplish our rebuilding goals”.

The agreement with the Wolfhounds appears to expand Connacht’s potential player pool into the New England area and provides an attractive option for ambitious New England players.

Elite Cup Update

Elite Cup Update:

Although no final decisions have been made about the Elite Cup for the upcoming season, prospects appear dim for 2014, as negotiations are ongoing but may be futile. As was reported by Rugbymag.com recently, the five remaining Elite Cup teams have failed so far to come to an agreement regarding the season.

As Seattle-OPSB is not participating in the upcoming Pacific Rugby Premiership, including one of the best teams in the country in the competition would provide several benefits. However the geographical location of the teams provides the most obvious impediment. Four East coast teams (NYAC and Old Blue in New York, Life in Georgia and Boston) voted 3-1 not to have Seattle-OPSB join in a five team conference. The travel costs are obvious, and unless every team had a comparable cost structure, some type of resource leveling would have to be agreed upon if the costs were to be part of a level playing field. We do not know if this was a sticking point, but we know from experience that cost sharing was a contributing factor in the demise of the Super League.

Another sticking point was apparently the scheduling of the games. NYAC wanted to have the flexibility to not play on USA Eagles camp weekends. Not an unreasonable request you might think, but this would definitely put a squeeze on the available weeks to run the competition. We talked to Boston’s Chris Williams, and he mentioned that one possibility would have to be mid-week games, with Elite Cup games on the weekends and Division 1 games mid-week. This might be attractive for the average spectator, but Williams felt it would not be fair to the D1 teams to ask them to move, especially since the D1 schedule has been in place for months.

So we may be left with a Pacific Rugby Premiership featuring some of the best teams on the West Coast (plus Denver and Glendale) in one competition, Seattle-OPSB possibly playing a cross-border competition, and most teams participating in the Division 1 competition. The local New England Division 1 competition is good, but once the playoffs begin, single elimination will make teams idle early in the season. The USA rugby landscape keeps changing, hardly what one would wish for.

Elite Cup on hold?

Reports are the Elite Cup is on hold (at best) for 2014, as the teams were not able to agree on the make up of the teams and schedule for the Spring competition. This will likely throw the schedule of Boston into turmoil, as well as Old Blue and NYAC. We will keep you posted…..

2013 Division 1 Week 10

NYAC claims sole possession of first place in the Northeast in the final game of the fall portion of the Division 1 season, defeating Boston RFC 28-26 in a game that was close all the way.  Old Blue ran out easy winners in the other game on the day, pulling away from a 29-15 halftime lead to beat Middlesex 84-25.

In the highly anticipated game in Amesbury, MA, Boston drew first blood with the breakaway by full back Duran Vota, who offloaded to supporting running Atoa Ripley for an early try, converted by Niko Ratumaitavuki for a 7-0 lead.

NYAC got their first try of the day through # 8 Alastair McFarland, a short range effort after a series on the Boston line. The conversion was no good, and mid way through the half, Boston’s Ratumaitavuki added to the Boston lead with a short range penalty.

Another break by Vota again threatened the NYAC line, but a try saving tackle by Neil McMillan ensured Boston would have to settle for another Ratumaitavuki penalty for a 13-5 Boston lead.  Boston has had the better of the recent exchanges, effectively counter rucking and unleashing some enterprising back line play.

NYAC’s David Neville reduced the gap with a long range penalty, and NYAC’s best period of the half followed. NYAC knocked on over the try line following a 5m scrum, but finally winger Kyle Granby takes a pass from Tom Coolican and scores between the posts.  The conversion puts NYAC in front for the first time right on halftime, 15-13 the score to NYAC.

The second half starts well for Boston, first Vota had a nice break before he was denied by another McMillan tackle, and shortly thereafter Boston’s entire back line seemed to have a hand in taking advantage of a NYAC turnover, with Ratumaitavuki touching down to regain the lead for Boston.

NYAC immediately responded however, with Gareth Gibbs getting a try in the corner, and the score is tied 20-20.

Boston wins the restart and forces a NYAC penalty, which Ratumaitavuki slots to regain the lead. NYAC has another good patch, featuring some hard running and eventually Kirkland Hamilton pops up and scores in the corner.

With ten minutes left, NYAC kicks away possession to the dangerous Boston back three, and Boston capitalize, forcing another penalty which Ratumaitavuki hits to put Boston back in front.  However NYAC’s Neville hits an almost identical three pointer to regain the NYAC lead.

With time winding down, Boston has NYAC under pressure and has an opportunity to regain the lead with a penalty attempt, but the kick is off the mark and NYAC is happy to bundle the ball into touch to wind up the exciting game.

“It was a really good game of rugby, and if you were a spectator you probably enjoyed it much more than I did” commented Boston’s Mike Diamantopoulos “NYAC has the ability to really crank it up in the second half, and there I thought we did an OK job.  Where we really struggled was our ability on kickoffs, I think they won every one of their kickoffs to us…so that really put us under a lot of pressure. On first phase where we had quality ball we were really good, we had plenty of line breaks and plenty of go-forward, we just didn’t produce enough of those moments”

NYAC’s coach Federico Rienhardt said “it was a tough game, a hard game, both teams played really well, I think the team that made the fewer mistakes won. Our defense was not as good as we want, we missed a few tackles, but it’s fine, it is part of the game.  We had a great season, we are missing a lot of players but our depth is growing, everyone who came into the game stepped up so I am very proud of these guys, it was a great season and hopefully it will keep getting better”.

With the win, NYAC is in sole possession of first place, four points ahead of Boston as the league wraps up play for the fall.  The games will start up again March 29 2014, interestingly enough with these two teams facing off again, as well as Middlesex hosting Old Blue and Mystic River hosting White Plains.

2013 Division 1 Week 9

In Week 9 action, Boston cruised to an easy win over Middlesex Rugby, extending a 45-5 halftime lead into a 83-12 win; while in the big clash in New York, NYAC had a somewhat surprising 53-17 win over Old Blue, with NYAC really putting the points on the board in the second half after leading 19-14 at the half.

The New England Division 1 game of the week lived up to expectations, with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds scoring a narrow 18-16 win over Mystic River to capture the Briar Cup.

In Malden, the game did not provide many moments of free flowing rugby, but whatever it lacked in that category it made up for in intensity as neither side was willing to cede an inch to the local rival.

The Wolfhounds converted early pressure into points, taking advantage of a botched Mystic clearance to score the first try of the day after twelve minutes, flanker Mike Dunphy getting credit for the score. Fifteen minutes later the Wolfhounds scored another try, this one after forcing a turnover at midfield and winning the kick and chase, scrumhalf Fred Deangelo coming up with the ball.

With the Wolfhounds in danger of pulling away, Mystic hit a penalty on the team’s first real foray into scoring territory to bring the score to 10-3, and that was the half time score.  Mystic continued their best period of rugby after the half, and kicker Mike Armstrong nailed another penalty to bring the score to 10-6, before Wolfhound’s Paddy Owens replied with a penalty to push the gap back to seven points .  Mid way through the half, Mystic’s Tim Holkenborg finished off a sweeping scoring movement, and the accurate Armstrong’s conversion tied the score at 13-13.

With fifteen minutes left, the Wolfhounds Alex Verdaguer broke from the back of a lineout near half way, and fed supporting second row Lulama Maveta who touched down near the corner.  Mystic reduced the gap with another penalty to make it 18-16, but it was the Wolfhounds who finished the game in the Mystic half to preserve the win.

“That’s what rugby is all about” said Wolfhounds coach Fergal Hehir, “18-16, tough matches like that, there really isn’t much between us. I thought we did deserve to win the game, our set piece was good and put their’s under pressure….and in the end I thought it was a fair result. I think their back row, especially Hollywood who would get on any team in the country at the moment, you have to get outside the back row because they stop attacks right on the gain-line and it is very hard to get going. It was scrappy but we came through in the end and I’m happy”.

Mystic coach David Gonzales commented “we killed ourselves in the first 30 minutes, we spent too much time messing around,  where we had the outs and didn’t take them so the ten point (Wolfhound lead) was fair. Later we actually got to play some rugby and we got the ball in hand and we started to show a little of what we can do. I was hoping it would flow more, but he game was ultimately decided by the penalty count and not by the rugby, but well done to the Hounds”.

The Wolfhounds finish the Fall portion of the schedule at (3-6), just ahead of Mystic River (3-6), but Mystic can leverage a win over White Plains (1-7) in the last game to edge past the Wolfhounds thanks to a superior bonus points won.  Middlesex (1-6) will travel to Old Blue (6-2) in the other game next week.  The final game of the season has Boston (7-0) hosting NYAC (7-0) in a mouth watering contest that should go some distance to deciding the final standings.  This final game is scheduled for November 16th.

2013 Division 1 Week 8

2013 Division 1 Week 8

With Boston resting this weekend, both Old Blue and NYAC kept pace by posting comprehensive wins, while White Plains made it a clean sweep by the New York teams over their New England opponents.

In Malden’s Pine Banks, New York’s Old Blue took advantage of the wind at their backs in the first half, cruising to a 25-5 halftime lead, and then adding to that lead in the second half to close out the game 39-5. Old Blue # 8 Jordan Badia-Bellinger had some storming runs early in the game, one of which where he brushed off some would-be tacklers to score near the posts. Adam Sidall converted, and soon followed up with a couple of penalties to push Old Blue out to a 13-0 lead midway through the half.

Old Blue kept the pressure on, notching two more tries near the half hour mark, including Badia-Bellinger’s second.  With the first half winding down, Mystic River’s best period of pressure resulted in a try from close range by prop Chris O’Donnell.

With the wind in the second half, the stage was set for Mystic to make a push. Mystic had several opportunities for points in the early goings of the second half, but the decision was made to go for seven rather than the easy three points. The decision did not pay off though, as Old Blue kept the goal line secure.

Later, as he was going for what would have been his fourth, he suffered what looked like a serious ankle injury and departed the field.

Mystic continued to push, but it was Old Blue to close out the scoring near the end and the game finished 39-5 to the visitors.

Old Blue was the only team to win on the road, as the Boston Irish Wolfhounds lost to NYAC 56-20, a game that had NYAC leading 27-10 at the half.  Also in New York, White Plains got in the winning column by earning a split of the series with Middlesex, White Plains pulling away late for a 33-14 victory.

Next week has a couple of crucial games, with NYAC (5-0) and Old Blue (6-1) facing off in New York.  With Boston (6-0) unlikely to be severely tested by Middlesex (1-5), both the New York teams will want to keep pace with Boston.

In Malden, Mystic River (2-5) will host the Wolfhounds (2-6), essentially with fourth place in the league at stake.

Boston's Niko Ratumaitavuki with pivotal score

(Above photo courtesty of Mike Gingras of http://www.mikegingrasphoto.com/)

Boston RFC had the best possible start to the game against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, converting turning an early turnover into seven points courtesy of some nice finishing by winger Atao Ripley. Boston’s speedy wingers were again involved shortly after, converting another long run into seven more points.  Just fifteen minutes into the game, Boston was in control 14-0.

To the Wolfhounds’ credit, the players responded with a sustained period of pressure in the Boston 22, but stout defense and a stronger Boston scrum limited the home team to three missed penalty attempts and the halftime score was 17-0 to the visitors.

The second half was better for the Wolfhounds, with strong running from Sean Pike, Steven Kelly and Tom Walsh especially making hard yards, scoring two converted tries to finely balance the game at 17-14. Both sides were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, Boston twice stopped inches short of the try line, and the Wolfhounds committing some untimely penalties.

Finally Boston’s Niko Ratunaitavuki managed to squeeze over in the corner for a crucial score.  Although he didn’t convert, he soon after hit a penalty that put the game out of reach at 25-14.

Wolfhounds coach Fergal Hehir said “We are disappointed, we could have been a lot closer, we made silly mistakes, turned over the ball and in fairness if you give Boston the breakaway ball like that in the open field they are very dangerous and they made us pay…. We didn’t fall off in the second half, and with Steven Kelly at eight and Tom Walsh at 12 could have dragged us back into it, got a couple of tries but we were too far behind to catch them”.

Boston coach reflected on the bonus point win: “a good day, though a little disappointed after being up 17-0 at the half. It was always going to be a tough day and I’m proud of the way the boys came back at the end.  We had a go-to-sleep time at the start of the second half which was disappointing, but credit to the Wolfhounds who played hard the whole time and they were certainly a worthy opponent playing pretty well”.

In the other local Division 1 game in New England, Mystic River defeated Middlesex 38-29, after leading 24-17 at the half. Finally in New York, Old Blue proved much too strong for White Plains, winning 43-12.

On October 26th, the Wolfhounds (2-5) go to New York with the task of trying to get a win against NYAC (5-0).  Middlesex RFC (1-4) also travel to New York to play White Plains (0-7).  In Malden, MA, Mystic River (2-4) get another crack at Old Blue (5-1) in the rematch of a close game from Week 2.  Boston has the week off.

2013 Division 1 Week 6

Northeast Division 1 Week Six

Boston RFC continued its unbeaten run this season, defeating White Plains by a score of 21-10 to move out to (5-0) in the standings.  No bonus point for Boston this time around though, as White Plains kept the game close throughout.

Boston started the game with a strong wind at their backs. Coach Mike Diamantopoulos remarked later “I thought that wind was worth 21 points”. Boston did play the first half mostly in White Plains territory, scoring two tries in a  three minute spell midway through the first half. Prop Tony Puroura and fullback Duran Vota each scored converted tries.

With Boston pushing hard to increase the advantage before the half, White Plains defended furiously and managed to keep the score to a fourteen point deficit at the half.

In the second half, White Plains was first on the board with a penalty by Conor McAuley.  White Plains kept up the pressure and forced several Boston penalties which kept White Plains knocking on the door. Finally White Plains executed a sweet cross field kick to score a try by Bobby Keane and bring the score to 14-10.

Now it was Boston’s turn to put some pressure on, and Boston came close to scoring half an hour into the second half.  With time winding down, Boston did cross for the final score of the game and once again Nike Ratunaitavuki made no mistake with the conversion and the score finished at 21-0.

White Plains coach Dan Pazio said “it was a great game, played in good spirits with two quality sides going at it.  They took their opportunities and we didn’t. When we scored ten minutes into the second half and then we went away from the kicking game as guys got excited and thought they saw a few opportunities to attack from deep. It went awry and we coughed up territory and if you do that you are going to have problems”.

Boston’s Diamantopoulos agreed “White Plains is a bit of an unlucky side. We didn’t use the wind well enough, 14-0 wasn’t enough at the half and we got a try that flattered us at the end.  It was a coin-toss game and we have to play better…we have kind of flat-lined the last couple of weeks, but White Plains is a good side and I don’t want to take away how well they played today.

Down in New York, Mystic River made it interesting against NYAC, coming back from a 24-3 halftime deficit to narrow the gap to 29-20, but NYAC finished much stronger to close out the game 62-25.

Also in New York, Old Blue swept the series against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, but this one was much closer than the first meeting between the sides. 24-10 in Old Blue’s favor was the halftime score, with Old Blue using a dominant scrum to set up a couple of scores.

There was no let down in the intensity on the second half, and Old Blue was to finish the game with 14 players as a result of a red card issued.  The final score was 38-25 in Old Blue’s favor. Notable on the day was Old Blue converging four of their six tries while the Wolfhounds did not convert any of their five.
