2013 Men’s Division 1 Playoff predictions

Division 1 Men’s Club Playoffs, April 27, 2013.

Round of 32:

Round 1 of the Division 1 Club National Playoffs is scheduled for April 27th, with a wide variety of contests on order.  The brackets can be found at various locations including usarugby.org and rugbymag.com. Here are some predictions, going in the order they are listed at usarugby.org.

OMBAC at Sacramento Lions: Sacramento has the top seed in their division, helped by San Francisco deciding not to proceed in the playoffs and Old Puget Sound not being eligible to capture the top seed. Sacramento struggled against the likes of those two teams, but was solid otherwise.  OMBAC has always been a force in California, and if this game was at OMBAC we would expect an OMBAC win, but we are going with Sacramento.

Provo at Dallas Harlequins: Who knows how strong Provo will travel?  That is always an unknown with that team. Dallas Harlequins has the experience and have had a lot of games in preparation, but Provo may cause enough problems here to come away with a win on the road.

Austin Huns at Denver Barbarians: Denver looks to be in position to make a good run this year, and at home should not have many problems.

Maryland Exiles at Boston: Boston is as good as they have been in a couple of years, and they should have no problems here, taking advantage of tough competitive games to be in a good position for a run at the D1 playoffs.

BYE at Palmer. Palmer takes advantage of not having to get play in this round.

Chicago Lions at Life University: Another juicy match-up here. It would be a shock to have a team as strong as the Lions not make the round of 16, but that’s the way this is shaping up. Life is tough at home, and the Lions would have to fire on all cylinders to take this.  We don’t see it happening this time.

Schuylkill River at Old Blue: Schuylkill has been knocking at the door on the D1 level for a few years, but got a tough draw against Old Blue in this round.  It is not a long drive for Old Blue, and they should take the road win.

Buffalo at PAC: Buffalo had a great Fall season and came into the last round highly rated, but completely laid an egg in the regional playoffs. This fixture is likely another bridge too far, especially on the road against a solid PAC side.

Chicago Griffins at New Orleans: New Orleans got bounced at this stage last year by the Chicago Lions. Can the Griffins do the same? New Orleans seems to have sought out a tougher schedule this year, so should not be surprised at this fixture. Can the Griffins travel strong?  Maybe, but we will stay with the home team this time around.

BYE at Metropolis: A week off for Metropolis.

Norfolk at Middlesex: Norfolk is a solid team with good experience at this level. Middlesex continues to improve, and bring a level of fitness and tenacity that Norfolk will not be able to match.

EPA Razorbacks at Belmont Shore: 2012 Champions Belmont Shore should be to strong here, especially at home.  The Razorbacks benefit from tough everyday competition, but Belmont should prevail.

Dallas at Glendale: We cannot see Dallas bothering Glendale here, despite some good results recently. Glendale will want to make another good run at a title, and they won’t slip up here.

KC Blues at Austin Blacks: Another interesting game here. KC is capable of playing good rugby, and they are in a very tough division so high seeds are hard to come by. Knocking off Austin though might be too much to ask, so we will go with the home team again.

San Diego Old Aztecs at Old Puget Sound Beach: Despite some decent performances, the Aztecs have struggled against the top teams in SoCal.  This will be no different, and a full strength OPSB side could run riot here.

So out of fourteen games, we are going with the home team in all but two. Provo and Old Blue are the two road wins we are picking, and honestly we waffled on Provo. If you are looking for more upsets, the two Chicago teams and maybe KC Blues are ones to look for.  It should be a great playoff series this year, too bad San Francisco Golden Gate and NYAC will not be part of it.

Wolfhouds take Acton 10’s

The Boston Irish Wolfhounds took the 2012 Acton 10’s title on Sunday July 8th. After the pool rounds, BIW defeated local rivals Boston in the quarterfinals by a nine point margin. A strong Middlesex side that has been impressive on the local 7’s circuit came with speed and fitness but the Hounds used experience and ball possession to shut them down and run through with a 26-14 A man should always express their sildenafil österreich feelings and discuss their problems with their partners, because communication will make your relationship stronger and eliminate misunderstandings from a relationship. The Falcons won the women’s division.

National Division 1 Championship

Well, we didn’t get a chance to post our predictions before the D1 final. We thought Glendale’s injuries would eventually catch up with the team, and we had liked Belmont since the start of the playoffs. But we were not quite ready to call this for Belmont, we were going to go with Glendale for the title. Belmont surprised us with the margin of victory, we don’t think anyone called that one-sided result.

Men’s Division 1 predictions

Men’s Division 1 seminfinals are June 2nd in Glendale, CO, with Glendale playing Palmer and Belmont Shore against Meetropolis.  A few weeks ago, most people would have no hesitation in predicting a Glendale v Belmont Shore final.  But that was a few weeks ago, and things may be a little closer than a foregone conclusion.

Glendale has suffered some key injuries, including to Captain Nic Johnson among others.  Glendale will feature perhaps the smallest forwards pack in the final 4. Palmer can be a physical side, and they emerged from a very competitive playoff group. We are still going with Glendale, but the door is open foor Palmer, if they can play a posession game.

In the other semi, Belmont has found a D1 title elusive, but now knows what it takes. Metropolis keeps improving, but we would be surprised if they pull an upset here.

Round of 8 predictions..

So our prediction percentages were “off” a little today. After going 15 for 16 last week, this week we were only 5 of 8. East Palo Alto lost to Kansas City Blues 22-13, when we thought EPA would win. Boston Irish Wolfhounds fought hard but fell to an increasingly impressive Chicago Lions side 43-5. And OMBAC lost to Austin 22-20 in a game we thought OMBAC would take.

So that leaves us with KC Blues against Belmont Shore, Mystic River against Metropolis, Chicago Lions against Palmer and Glendale against Austin.

KC Blues v Belmont Shore. Belmont rolled in their game 49-5 so they should be rested and ready for Sunday’s action.  KC didn’t have as easy a time of it in their game. We expect Belmont to win here.

Mystic River v Metropolis. Both teams had close games so would not have had the luxury of resting anyone. Metropolis seems young and fit, Mystic can kick for points. This could go either way, we think it’s a pick-em.  We will go with Metropolis.

Chicago Lions v Palmer. Both teams had larger than expected wins in their game on Saturday, against decent opposition. We liked Palmer from the start to make it to the final 4. Chicago is giving us pause, but we will stick with the original prediction and go with Palmer.

Glendale v Austin. Austin knocked off OMBAC and Glendale knocked out Santa Monica in the very tough group. Glendale is hot favorite to make the final 4, and has been for a while. Austin may be better than we thought, but Glendale has the firepower so we take t

Division 1 Round of 16 picks

Here are Nerugby.com’s USA Division 1 round of 16 predictions.  We got 15 out of 16 right in the previous round!  But it gets much tougher here.  We think this is one of the strongest Division 1 brackets in some time. One bracket (Glendale, Santa Monica, Austin and OBMAC) could easily be a final 4 grouping, and we also have Belmont Shore, Palmer, Boston Irish, Metropolis, PAC, Chicago Lions…yikes!

East Palo Alto v Kansas City Blues (Chula Vista, CA): We expect East Palo Alto bulldogs to beat Kansas City blues to continue their great run. It is in California, so that should help EPA also.

Belmont Shore v Dallas (Chula Vista, CA): Belmont Shore should have no trouble with Dallas in the second half of the bracket as they work their way to what we expect is a final 4 appearance.

Mystic River v Atlanta Renegades (Pittsburgh, PA): Mystic River should recognize this is their best chance in years to make it to the final four.  Playing smart and dedicated rugby, they can get by the Atlanta Renegades.

PAC v Metropolis (Pittsburgh, PA): This is an interesting match-up.  We are not so sure about how good PAC is, so we are going with Metropolis here as the relative newcomer knocks off the established force.

Chicago Lions v Boston Irish Wolfhounds (Pittsburgh, PA): Another intriguing matchup.  If Boston Irish are going to win, they have to slow down scrumhalf David Selimos.  That won’t be easy, and the Lions are peaking at the right time.  However we will go with the New England representative here, counting on ‘Hounds experience from last year’s final 4 trip.

Palmer v Norfolk (Pittsburgh, PA):  Norfolk is a decent, solid team but we think Palmer have more rugby experience and should be able to get by this one. At some point Palmer is going to pay a penalty for not having that many tough games the spring we don’t think this round is where they will struggle.

Glendale v Santa Monica (Chula Vista, CA):  This is another tough matchup, but we and everyone else expect Glendale to make it to the final 4 and beyond.  Santa Monica is used to the big stage and they knocked off the fancied Utah team in the round of 32. This could be a tough game but we will go for Glendale here.

Austin v OMBAC (Chula Vista, CA):  The final game is Austin against OMBAC and we think Old Mission Beach will be too strong for Austin here in another high profile game.

Predictions for Sunday will be posted Saturday night.

Division 1 Round of 32 – Picks

Here are my selections for the round of 32:

West 1:
East Palo Bulldogs v Las Vegas: EPA has had a great year. Las Vegas might normally be expected to win this, but with EPA at home they get the nod.

KC Blues v Austin Huns: Kansas should be too good here.

Belmont Shore v Sacramento Lions: Belmont should challenge for the whole thing this year. Sacramento can be good and they play in a tough division, but Belmont should take this physical game.

Dallas v Denver. Taking Dallas here but this could be close.

East 2:

Mystic River v Schuylkill River.  Mystics should take this one easily enough, though Mystic could find this a trap game.

Atlanta Renegades v Cincinnati:  Cinci may benefit from a stronger schedule, but Atlanta should be better here.

PAC v Monmouth: Monmouth is tenacious, but PAC has the experience to pull through and make a strong run in the Championship.

Metropolis v Charlotte: Charlotte has weakened over the last few years.  Metropolis is on a big upswing and should take this.

New Orleans v Chicago Lions: NOLA is very good, and playing at home.  The Lions have woken up and are ready to play.  If the Lions are at full strength, this could be the first #4 v # 1 upset. Pick: Lions.

Boston Irish v Pittsburgh: Boston Irish to win at home.

Palmer v No one.  Palmer happily accept a forfeit here.  Wouldn’t have mattered probably, Palmer is that good.

Norfolk v New York: Norfolk has a lot of potential and they should be able to get by New York, unless New York has improved from the fall.

West 2:

Glendale v HARC: Glendale easily over HARC.

Utah v Santa Monica: Probably the most fascinating matchup. Utah’s short journey to the playoffs is well documented.  Santa Monica is a very good third seed out of Southern Cal. Utah is explosive, but Santa Monica has the organization to starve Utah of the ball.  Very tough to call, but Utah at home gets the nod.

Austin v No one. Another forfeit, as Boulder forfeits to Austin.

OMBAC v Olympic Club: Another fascinating matchup in a crazily competitive bracket. Olympic Club had an erratic start to the season, but has been going great since then. O-Club not afraid to play tough games to help prepare. OMBAC was second only to Belmont in So Cal, and is at home, so that will help. OMBAC in a close one.

Middlesex RFC moving to NERFU Division 1?

Middlesex is apparently going to move to Division 1 in the Spring of 2012. Middlesex was supposed to move up at least once before, but the club fought the promotion, claiming, among several reasons, that the teams was not ready, several veterans were retiring, and recruiting would be difficuly when competing in the same market as the likes of Mystic River.

It was apparent though, that Division 2 was not the place for Middlesex.  The team dominated the the Fall league, losing just one regular season game in the past two years.  Bonus point wins punctuated every win this past fall, and the undefeated B-side season belied the supposed lack of depth of the club.

Middlesex made it to the National Round of 16 the last two years in Division 2, losing to the the eventual finalists Tampa Krewe in 2011.  If the move is confirmed, Middlesex will add much needed tough competition in Division 1, where the club will join teams like Boston RFC, Boston Irish Wolfhounds, Mystic River and South Shore in a heavily Boston-centric division.

New England players granted historic playing contracts

USA Rugby has released the names of the Rugby Sevens players who will take up the first full time training contracts in 2012. According to USA Rugby, the players were selected based on the needs of the current USA Sevens squad, with a long term focus on the 2016 Olympics where Sevens will make an appearance.

Suniula has appeared infrequently for Boston rugby since his relocation to the area last year. As he has frequently been called up for representative honors, his availability seems to have been limited.  His most recent high profile appearances for the National team was in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, where he performed well at flyhalf. Katie has consistently performed well for the National team recently.
The players will live and train at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA., alongside many future Olympic hopefuls.
