ARP 2015-2016: Spring season well underway

With two weeks of the (apparently final) Spring ARP season underway, the pattern of the fall has continued in the early results. The New York teams show the way, Mystic River continues to impress, and the other two Boston teams are struggling.

Week 1 had periodic glimmers of hope for the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Boston RFC, but not enough to seriously challenge the New York teams. The Wolfhounds were in a tight three point game against Old Blue New York before slipping badly in the second half to lose 44-10. Against NYAC, Boston slumped to 45 point deficit before recovering to salvage the latter part of the game and end up with a 14-45 final score.

Week 2 had Mystic River visiting Boston RFC, and Mystic’s up-tempo game repeatedly put Boston on the defensive, fast ball and quick passing repeatedly slicing open Boston’s defenses. Mystic were quickly ahead by three converted scores, en route to a 33-7 half time score. Boston enjoyed good lineout ball and put the Mystic goal-line under pressure often, but rarely came away with points. Mystic’s backline, orchestrated by new outhalf Rob Malneek (who has replaced Pono Haitsuka, freshly minted as one of the few New England connected players with a PRO rugby contract in San Diego) made effective use of the quick ball provided by the forward’s platform.

Down in New York, another one sided result was posted in the meeting of NYAC and The Boston Irish Wolfhounds, 53-5 the reported result.

April 9th will feature a full slate of games, with the big clash in New York between Old Blue and NYAC. NYAC has had the entire winter to think about the seven point loss to their rivals at the end of the fall season, and the rematch should be entertaining.

Boston makes the trip to Life University, not an easy task at the best of times and very difficult for a clearly rebuilding young Boston side. Boston Irish Wolfhounds will host Mystic River, and the Wolfhounds will have to step up the defensive operations in order to avoid another fifty point drubbing.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 7 Life 92 Boston 3; Old Blue 35 NYAC 28; Life 57 Boston Irish Wolfhounds 22

Ina  full slate of games this weekend, Life University was the big winner, taking maximum points from two games on a road trip to Boston, while the local showdown in New York had Old Blue getting the better of rivals NYAC.

The first of Life’s two games this weekend was played in unseasonable warm temperatures north of Boston. The visitors ran rampant over Boston RFC, scoring early and often to win 92-3.

Life’s second game of he weekend was comparably a closer affair, but another win for Life with a 57-22 over the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.  Featuring a young team, Life employed a pressure defense and lightning quick strikes to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Wolfhounds started off the scoring with an early penalty, but Life scored its first try of the day after about 18 minutes to claim a lead it would not relinquish.

Following a yellow card issued to a Life forward, the Wolfhounds enjoyed a long period of pressure, camped near the Life goal line. But a misfiring Wolfhounds lineout and stout Life defense ensured Life did not suffer any damage. Indeed Life turned things around and notched a shorthanded try and followed that up with two other in the last few minutes of the half to take a 26-3 halftime lead. Noteworthy was Life’s Conner Mooneyham, who claimed three of the four first half tries.

The second half was wonderfully entertaining for the spectators, with eight tries scored. The Wolfhounds come strong out of the gates to narrow the gap with a converted try, but two quick tries by Life extended the lead. The Wolfhounds scored one especially  crowd pleasing try, winger Danny Collins finishing off a sweeping movement featuring some quick passing. But every time the Wolfhounds scored, Life had a quick response, highlighted by a couple of intercept tries that put the icing on the cake for the 57-22 victory.

The ARP will take a break for the winter, with Life sitting pretty in an undefeated position, followed by Old Blue in second place.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 6 Wolfhounds over Boston; Mystic fall to Old Blue

October 24th, 2015. In the night game in New York, Old Blue came out all guns blazing and ran out to a first half 18-0 lead against high flying Mystic River. Michael St. Clair and Samuel Scroggins were the try scorers, and James Bird added the rest of the points through the boot for Old Blue.

Mystic clawed back a couple of penalties on either side of the half, and a try midway through the half brought the deficit to eight points. Old Blue responded with another Bird penalty to gain some breathing room. A try from Mystic prop Chris O’Donnell with five minutes left, converted by Alatasi Tupou, brought the score to 24-20, but there would be no more scoring and Old Blue would take the win.

Down in Canton, Boston Irish Wolfhounds played host to rivals Boston RFC, with both teams badly needing a win after some recent poor results. The Wolfhounds would win 32-22, with Wolfhounds’ veteran second row Adam Thomas leading his side to the win.

Five tries for the Wolfhounds to one for Boston might suggest one story, but the game itself was something different, and featured four lead changes with the young Boston side regaining the lead with twenty minutes to go.

The Wolfhounds would finish stronger, enjoying the benefits of having a full squad available to hit for two final quarter tries to notch the win.

Was Wolfhounds’ coach Fergal Hehir nervous when Boston took the lead mid way through the second half? “To be honest, I wasn’t” he said, “I thought we would score if we strung a few phases together, and finally having our full team together after so long ….especially in our back line with Dustin Cooper and Peter Upton coming in made a huge difference…and I was always confident we could score”.

There is one game on the cards this weekend, with NYAC looking to rebound from their loss against Mystic last week, but going on the road against Life University won’t be an easy task for the New York side.

ARP Week 5 Mystic River 42 NYAC 5

Another week, another big win for Mystic River, this time against national powerhouse and defending Division 1 Champion NYAC.

On a chilly fall day, Mystic looked to continue their recent superlative form, and Mystic took full advantage of a NYAC side that did not appear to have their usual complement of players available. With returning Mystic outhalf Pono Haitsuka back directing traffic, Mystic jumped out to an early twelve point lead.

Solid defense kept NYAC off the scoreboard, and Mystic added a third try, pushing out to a 19-0 half time lead. Mystic’s Stephen Dazzo and Alvatasi Tupou combine long runs to allow Tupou to notch his second try shortly after half time to push Mystic further ahead.

Mystic survived a yellow card to Tupou without giving up any points, and once back to full strength moved ahead 39-0. NYAC finally gets on the board with a forwards try, but Mystic finishes the scoring with another Jon Kokinda penalty for a 42-5 final score.

“Mystic was clearly the better team today” mentioned NYAC’s Neil McMillan after the game, “and that try for us might have even flattered us really…we want to play the best teams around, and today Mystic clearly showed they are one of those teams”.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 4 Mystic over Boston, NYAC over Boston Irish, Life over Old Blue

October 3rd was a busy day for the ARP, with lots of points scored in the three games on offer. By Mystic River’s count, it had been seven years since the club’s last win over rivals Boston RFC, a fact you could scarcely believe after witnessing the 58-13 drubbing Mystic inflicted on their local rivals.

Mystic generally had the better of the first half against Boston, scoring three tries against two penalties for a 22-6 halftime lead. After weathering a yellow card relatively unscathed, Mystic turned on the jets in the second half, rolling in half a dozen tries in the win, with winger Chris Frazier finishing off his hat-trick. Boston closed out the scoring with a short range try for the final score of 58-13.

Down in Canton, MA, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds had a much more respectable outing as compared to the previous week, taking an early lead and leading visiting NYAC for much of the first half. The offense ruled the second half as the teams racked up five pointers, and an early flurry of those put NYAC ahead to stay and run out to a 52-27 win.

The third game of the day had Old Blue of NY on the road in Georgia against Life University. An early try put Life on the front foot, and though Old Blue’s Luke Hume pulled on back mid way through the first half, all the other scoring was done by the hosts, who ran out 46-7 winners.

This upcoming weekend, Oct 17th, Boston entertains Old Blue with both sides looking to rebound from heavy losses, while Mystic River hosts NYAC in an intriguing matchup.

2015-2016 APR: Mystic River big over Boston Irish Wolfhounds 63-0

Mystic River continued to build its hugely successful year, demolishing local rivals the Boston Irish Wolfhounds this weekend by a score of 63-0 in the APR. Mystic is the most recent entry into the APR, playing a modified ARP schedule which involves playing all teams except Life University.

In the game against the Wolfhounds, Mystic withstood some early pressure and then erupted to score three tries in a ten minute period to take a solid lead.

The Wolfhounds attempted to climb back into the game, but was not able to capitalize on their few scoring opportunities, while Mystic was highly efficient, converting each opportunity for a 24-0 half time lead.

Any thoughts of a Wolfhounds comeback didn’t last long, as a Wolfhounds yellow card thirty seconds into the second half put the visitors in a tough position. Mystic took advantage of the extra number to add two tries and after that it was only a matter of wondering what the final score might be.  .

Many of the try scorers in the game were backs, as Jared Collison, Nate Fox (2), Alatasi Tupoa (3) and Pono Haitsuka all scored tries, but the real story was the Mystic forwards standing toe to toe with the Wolfhounds pack and taking the upper hand throughout the game.

Mystic will face Boston at the Mystic home field at 4PM October 3rd in a game that could continue to rewrite the local team rankings, while the Wolfhounds will have to regroup to take on NYAC, at 3.30 on the same day in Canton.

2015-16 ARP Week 2: Old Blue over Boston Irish Wolfhounds 48-21

Old Blue ran out 48-21 winners over the Boston Irish Wolfhounds in a night game in New York on September 19th. Seven tries to two was the final tally, with the Old Blue scoring the fast turf to give the Wolfhounds defensive problems.

2015-2016 ARP Week 1; NYAC win over Boston

The American Rugby Premiership started its 2015-2016 season with a single game on September 12th between NYAC and Boston. NYAC was the home team and came away with a 43-3 win. Both teams seemed to have a mix of new and familiar players.

Three tries in each half did the damage for NYAC, though the game was close on the scoreboard until NYAC crossed for two converted tries just before halftime. Those 14 points pushed NYAC ahead 25-3. Boston’s Richie Lobb contributed his side’s three points.

The second half also had NYAC scoring 14 points in the final 15 minutes to put the game truly out of reach.

An ARP select side took on the Ontario Blues as part of a double header in Ottawa along with the USA v Canada International fixture.

The ARP side were defeated by the home side on a final score line of 38-20. The game was entertaining and competitive throughout, but  the Canadian side’s familiarity with each other meant they were more clinical when try-scoring opportunities presented themselves.
The game started at a frenetic pace, with the ARP side exerting constant pressure in the Ontario half. They couldn’t get over the line however, and a Richie Lobb penalty was scant reward for their efforts. Ontario’s line-out and strong ball-carrying saw them establish dominance in the later part of the first half, running in three tries for a 20-6 lead at the half.
The second half saw both teams look to attack at every opportunity. The greater coherence of the Ontario outfit resulted in a try not long after the break. The introduction of James Bird to the ARP side injected creativity to their play, and they scored two tries, one from a clever cross-field kick, to leave just 11 points between the teams.
Ontario rallied, however, and closed out the game with a forwards try in the final minute.
Credit is due to both sides for an entertaining match. Both teams defended with passion and attacked creatively with ball in hand.

On the final competitive weekend of the ARP before the winter break, Life University cruised to a somewhat surprising 61-6 win over visiting Old Blue New York in Georgia, while near Boston, eighty minutes of hard rugby failed to put any separation between the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Boston RFC, the game ending deadlocked at 22 points each.

Uruguay 27 USA 27

In the first of the two games that will decide who goes through to the World Cup in Group B, USA and Uruguay tied at 27-27. After a poor first half, the USA took the lead through two well worked tries from Samu Manoa and Chris Wyles. Uruguay came back to tie the game, taking advantage of a creaky USA scrum down the stretch.  Playing a man down in the scrum, blind side winger came in to flank the scrum, and Uruguay took advantage of the overlap to score an easy try in the corner to tie the game.  Might have been just as well, as yet another scrum penalty might have meant a penalty try and an easy conversion.  As it was, the conversion was missed and the game ended in a tie.

All to play for next week in the second leg.

Mandela wearing the jersey of Springbok captain Francois Pienaar in the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final is an iconic image.

One of my earlier recollections of issues with South Africa was when some store clerks in Dublin refused to stock South African produce and went on strike. That was an early salvo in the drive to put the squeeze on South African economy, a drive which helped end apartheid in that country.
