Free Jacks secure the win with 22-21 victory over visiting Utah Warriors.

Playing with a steady wind at their backs, the Free Jacks opened the first ever home game in the MLR on Saturday, in front of a limited in-person attendance due to Covid-19.

The early exchanges in the first half hour were pretty even, with Beaudein Waaka slotting an early penalty after a Warrior player illegally killed a promising Free Jacks attack.

As halftime approached, the Warriors’ Josh Whippy scored a pretty try following a failed Free Jacks clearance attempt, to take the lead. The Free Jacks quickly replied, capitalizing on an accidental offside to force a 5 meter lineout, after which Joe Johnston crashed over for the try and a lead which the home team never relinquished. Waaka added another penalty to leave the halftime score 11-7.

With the wind diminishing somewhat, the Free Jacks had a dream start to the second half. Forcing a turnover and a penalty infraction, the Free Jacks opted for the lineout and after some strong forward movement getting close to the goal line, some good blind side handling by Harrison Boyle had Dougie Fife crossing for the try.

The Free Jacks had a poor restart in attempting to secure the kick, but took advantage of a couple of lineout steals to work back downfield and force another penalty, again converted by Waaka to stretch the lead to 19-7.

After another successful Waaka penalty, again the Free Jacks had trouble securing the restart. With the Warriors needing more points than an easy three pointer that was on offer, the Warriors upped the intensity and were finally rewarded with a try, this one of the penalty variety. The lead was down to eight points and the Free Jacks were down to 14 players, with fifteen minutes left and the score at 22-14.

The Free Jacks had an opportunity to stretch the lead and effectively put the game out of reach soon after, but a Free Jacks lineout malfunction gave the Warriors renewed opportunity. The Free Jacks were under increased pressure, with Utah’s Mike Kruse and Mike Te’o looking dangerous, and finally Te’o gathered a kick through to notch a late try. The conversion put Utah within one point, but that was the last action of the day, as the Free Jacks celebrate opening the MLR season in New England with a valuable win.

Free Jacks win big over Houston SaberCats 32-0

In Week 2 of the MLR, the Free Jacks travelled to Houston to take on the SaberCats at the excellent AVEVA stadium. Houston had knocked off the Seattle SeaWolves in Week 1 so it promised to be a tough test for the Free Jacks.

The Free Jacks got off to an excellent start, putting pressure from the opening kickoff, which led to an early lead. Check out the first try analysis by Yeti Rugby.

March 22, 2021: Free Jacks drop opener to LA Giltinis

The Free Jacks lost the season opener to the Los Angeles Giltinis over the weekend, falling 42-27 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

It looked ominous for the Free Jacks early, the visitors giving up two tries in the first fifteen minutes, as the hosts effectively moved the ball around the back line in the brilliant sunshine to run out an early fourteen point lead. DTH  Van Der Merwe was the try scorer both times, while Matt Giteau was perfect with the conversions.

The Free Jacks fought back effectively, using a short side lineout move to cut the deficit. A flurry of yellow cards were issued by the referee before halftime – two to the Free Jacks, one to LA, but the Free Jacks kept in touch on the scoreboard, trailing just 21-17 at the half.

Munster A defeat New England Free Jacks 38-19

With the temperature gauge pushing 70, it was finally starting to feel a little more like Spring on Saturday as the Free Jacks hosted a strong Munster “A” side at the historic Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA.

The Free Jacks were first on the board with a simply worked move that sent fullback Danny Collins over after just six minutes, a score converted by Tadhg Leader. Munster replied just four minutes later, taking advantage of a string of penalties conceded by the Free Jacks to attack aggressively and level the score. Barely five minutes later, Munster kicked over the blind side defense and winger Alex Wootton was able to secure for the go-ahead score.

Two more tries around the half hour mark pushed Munster’s advantage to 24-7 at half time. Munster took advantage of most of the opportunities it had, whereas the Free Jacks were not as successful.

With the wind in the second half, Munster looked to push their supremacy and added a fifth try shortly after the restart. However Tadhg Leader drew cheers from the locals, freezing the defense and scooting in for a try to bring the score to 31-12. With a yellow card issued for multiple infractions to the Free Jacks, the locals had to play a lot of defense but were rewarded when Pecili Rinakama latched onto a kick through by leader to race untouched for a try, and the Free Jacks were back within reach.

With less than twenty minutes left, the Free Jacks relished the physical exchanges and increasingly grew into the game as the benches were emptied, however the Free Jacks could get no closer and indeed Munster scored with the final play of the day to close the scoring at 38-19.

Free Jacks fall to Ulster “A” 43-15

In the Free Jacks’ second game of Cara Cup action, the local team fell to the visitors by a score of 43-15 in Weymouth MA on March 24th.

A quick analysis suggests the Free Jacks were closer than the scoreline suggests, with Ulster racking up a few late scores to pad the scoreline a little. But that might be a little unfair to Ulster, who completely dominated the early going. Indeed it was surprising that Ulster didn’t convert early dominance into a bigger lead.

With territorial domination, points on the board and playing with a man advantage, Ulster looked in danger of routing the locals. But credit to the Free Jacks, ferocious defending kept the game within reach in the first half.

Connacht Rugby defeat Free Jacks in first round of Cara Cup

Ona  windy and chilly day in Weymouth, a sizeable crowd of up to a thousand people watched Connacht defeat the Free Jacks by a score of 38-7.

The early exchanges were fairly even as the Free Jacks enjoyed some good attacking platform, but a 70m intercept by center Sean O’Brien put Connacht ahead midway through the first half.  Kicking was a problem for both teams, but especially the home side, as several times ground was lost with kicks directly into touch.

Connacht added a second try before the half to lead at half-time by 12-0.

Exciting developments in top level rugby

There are many encouraging signs for local men’s top level rugby in 2018 and beyond.

We have seen the solidification of the Major League Rugby’s upcoming plans, with the schedule for 2018 published, addition of top notch broadcast outlets, and, more important for us in New England, the announcement of the New York franchise, called Rugby United New York.

After a down year locally in 2017, with the ongoing struggles of Boston and Boston Irish, coupled with a difficult Fall campaign for Mystic River, the top D1 team in the region, we needed some good news on the club scene. The establishment of the New York franchise will naturally mean looking for potential expansion sites and Boston would presumably make the short list.
