ARP Week 5: NYAC, Old Blue win

October 8th, 2016: ARP Week 5 NYAC defeat Mystic River in a tight game 27-22, while Old Blue rebounded from last week’s loss to NYAC with a big win over Boston 96-0.

On Mystic’s home field, two evenly matched teams battled for eighty minutes and the outcome was in doubt right up to the final whistle.

In a close opening half, Mystic took the opportunities on offer, while NYAC seemed to be getting off to a slow start. A short range try from Luke Schlotman put Mystic on the board, and NYAC responded with a try through Anthony Parra.

After NYAC’s Harry Bennett and Mystic’s Alatasi Tupou exchange penalties, Mystic fullback Nick Fujiwara is in perfect position to gather a kick through for a try to put Mystic ahead at the half by 17-10.

A more fired up NYAC go ahead in the second half, with Al McFarland and Ross Deacon breaking down the blind side for a converted try to tie the score, then take the lead with another Bennett penalty. NYAC was enjoying the bulk of the possession but stout defense keeps the scoreline from ticking over. Highlight reel tackles from Mystic, including a couple by Fujiwara, keep the game tight, but eventually NYAC’s McFarland ploughs over for a 27-17 lead.

Both coaches took positives from the game. Mystic’s Josh Smith complimented the play of new comer John Sullivan at 8 and returning center Evin O’Driscoll, and was consoled by picking up the bonus point, but said it’s tough to make up any losses and a better middle twenty minutes of the second half and it might have been a different story.

NYAC’s Mike Tolkin was really pleased to come away with the win on the road against the defending Division 1 National Champions, although he sees room for improvement “we had some opportunity to put some points on the board and put it away, but we couldn’t capitalize.  I think some bad decision making on our part cost us, and we need to take some more chances, especially against good opposition….winning on the road is huge, especially against the defending national champs, our forwards gutted it out, our set piece was good, lineout sorted itself out and the tactical kicking game was good, especially in the second half”.
